Uttar Pradesh: Retired RPF sub-inspector Jillu Yadav, who fought Ajmal Kasab at CST on 26/11, passes away

VARANASI: Retired RPF sub-inspector Jillu Yadav, whose heroics made terrorists Ajmal Kasab and abu Ismail, flee the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) during the 26/11 attack in 2008, died of cardiac arrest at his native village Mohav in Cholapur area of the district on Wednesday. He was 65.

Jillu Yadav retired from the service five years ago and returned to his native village where he lived with wife and four sons in a joint family, his brother Mahendra Yadav said, mentioning that the agrarian family had become popular overnight after the courageous act of Yadav at the CST station.

Yadav was on duty at the CST when Kasab and Ismail entered the railway station on the night of November 26, 2008, firing indiscriminately at passengers. Reacting swiftly, Yadav snatched the .303 rifle of a GRP constable and opened a retalitatory fire at the two terrorists. The sudden counter-attack caught them off-guard and the two escaped towards Cama Hospital, but not before killing 50 persons on the platform.

Mahendra recalled that his brother would often regret that had he killed the two terrorists at the railway station itself, many innocent lives could have been saved in the terror attack. For his act of bravery, Yadav was awarded the President Police Medal and a monetary reward of Rs 10 lakh. Yadav was also among those who met former US President Barack Obama during his visit to Mumbai in 2010.

The mortal remains of Yadav were consigned to flames at Manikarnika Ghat on Tuesday late night. His youngest son Rakesh Yadav lit the pyre after the funeral procession, which was attended by hundreds of people from Cholapur area.
