LUCKNOW: Almost a week after Samajwadi Party kickstarted a campaign across Uttar Pradesh to register consumers for 300-units of free electricity, the election commission of India has sought a report on the matter from district election officers.
Confirming the action, a senior ECI official said, “Under a routine process following a written complaint on the matter, the ECI has sought a report from all 75 DEOs.”
Last Thursday, January 20, lawyer Yogesh Somvanshi practicing in Allahabad high court Lucknow bench wrote a letter to ECI and lodged a complaint against Samajwadi party.
Speaking to TOI, lawyer said, “No political party should be allowed to gratify voters and attempt to illegally influence them to vote in their favor. The campaign of Samajwadi Party to register consumers for 300- units of free electricity every month is a corrupt practice as defined in section 123 of Representation of the People Act, 1951.”
It’s worth mentioning that on January 18, during the press conference in Lucknow Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav announced to provide free electricity if his party came in power. The very next day after the announcement Samajwadi party workers and social media cell shared scores of pictures and video of people registering themselves for the free electricity scheme.
