Uttar Pradesh: Criminal injured in exchange of fire with police in Pratapgarh, held

PRAYAGRAJ: A wanted criminal was injured and arrested in an exchange of fire with the police near Double Ki Inari area under the limits of Mandhata police station of Pratapgarh district late on Wednesday night.

The injured criminal, identified as Sufiyan alias Pochi, a resident of Bahrapur, was admitted to the district hospital of Pratapgarh for treatment.

The police have also seized two country-made pistols of 0.315 bore along with five live cartridges, three used cartridges, a looted bike and an Aadhaar card from the spot.

Police said, “A joint police team of crime branch and Mandhata police had an encounter with a gang of criminals who were involved in a robbery in village Bari Nahar Bujha under the limits of Mandhata police station on March 21.”

A gang of three criminals had on March 21 stopped a man identified as Shailendra Kumar, a resident of Gazipur and looted his bike, one mobile and Rs. 1,000 cash from him.

Following the incident, a case under sections 392, 504 and 506 of IPC was registered.

Police said, “It was around 1:30 am (Wednesday night) and police were carrying out checks. They received information about criminals’ movement and had an encounter with the gang.”

While one criminal was injured and arrested in a police encounter, two of his accomplices managed to give a slip to the police party taking advantage of darkness.

The criminal sustained bullet injuries with his right leg.

Police said that as many as four criminal cases were pending against the injured Sufiyan.
