Uttar Pradesh: Armed cow vigilantes beat up people in Mathura over suspicion of 'beef sale'

AGRA: A group of armed cow vigilantes created ruckus and allegedly thrashed some people in Mathura’s Mewati locality of Aurangabad area on Wednesday morning over suspicion of "sale of beef" by them in the area. The cow vigilantes have been booked by police under various IPC Sections.

Police said members of Gau Raksha Dal claimed that they had inputs of beef sale in the area and they reached there to "check" without informing police. While police claimed that no one was beaten up, local residents claimed that cow vigilantes thrashed people.

"I was sleeping on my terrace when I heard screams around 7.30 am. Nearly 20-25 people carrying country-made pistols were knocking the door of my neighbour Pappu Qureshi and then they thrashed him and his family members," said a local resident Aas Mohammad. He claimed that the suspects fired at least 25 rounds in the air to create a panic.

“I requested them not to fire as someone could be hurt but they did not pay heed to my requests,” he further said. Since Mathura city has been declared a pilgrimage site there is complete ban on sale of meat. Aas Mohammad said that these vigilantes tried to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the city.

SP (city) MP Singh said that the accused tried to enter Pappu’s house but later they were surrounded by local residents and they ran away after opening fire in the air.

He added that the FIR has been registered against 14 people including two identified ones under IPC Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 307 (attempt to murder), 336 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others), 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and section 7 in the Criminal Law amendment Act at Sadar police station.
