Uttar Pradesh: AAP MP, workers detained on way to Lakhimpur Kheri

LUCKNOW: The Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh and at least 40 other party workers were detained by Uttar Pradesh Police at Biswa in Sitapur around 12.30am on Monday as they attempted to reach Lakhimpur Kheri.

By Monday night, the party workers had been moved to a guest house in the Sitapur with the police refusing to let them proceed forward and AAP members refusing to turn back.

"We were made to sit in our vehicles for around 10 hours, from 12.30am to 11am. Then the police shifted us to the guest house and there a heavy police presence outside," Sanjay Singh told TOI on Monday night.

A delegation of local farmers who are a part of the Sanyukt Morcha met Singh at the guest house in the evening and promised to support the agitation in support of the farmers, the MP said.

He said that they would continue to remain at the guest house till as long as they were not allowed to move to Lakhimpur. “There is no clarity on what the government is doing in this matter. We do not know under what sections the accused are being charged with and we will decide on a future course of action by Tuesday. For the time being, it is wait and watch. The government’s high handed behaviour with opposition parties in this matter will cost it dear," said Singh.

On Monday, AAP held protests in all districts of the state while Delhi cabinet minister Gopal Rai led a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
