Uttar Pradesh: 19-year-old girl kills self after college mate puts video of sexual assault online

BAREILLY: A 19-year-old college student hanged herself to death in Moradabad after a video clip of two men sexually assaulting her went viral on social media on Thursday. Both the accused have been arrested, police said. The teenager killed herself when both her parents had left home for work. A first-year MA student at a college in Bareilly, she was found hanging.

On Friday, the girl's parents filed a complaint at Kundarki police station alleging that two men, one of them studying in the same college and the other his cousin, had been blackmailing her for a while, threatening to upload the video of the assault on platforms online. Police said the parents are unaware where and when the assault took place and that it is a matter of investigation.

"My daughter didn't tell me about the video or the incident but she said she was upset because a local boy in her college was out to defame her," the mother told police. She said, "I thought of telling this to her father but we never mustered the courage."

The girl had recently completed her graduation in arts and her family was planning to marry her off. "She was a bright student but her life was cut short. The police must take action against the culprits who destroyed my daughter's life," the victim's mother said.

During investigation, police found that the video was shared by two men, Ali Ahmad, a student of the same college where the girl went, and his cousin Umar Ahmad. After recording the statement of the girl's family, police arrested the duo and sent them to jail on Friday. The accused have been booked under section 306 (abetment of suicide) and section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC along with section 67 of the IT Act. Police have also recovered the video of the assault . SP (rural) Vidya Sagar Mishra said, "We have recovered the video shared from their Facebook accounts to defame the girl which forced her to take such an extreme step. We will conduct a thorough investigation and a charge-sheet will be filed at the earliest for a speedy trial."
