LUCKNOW: Amid the ongoing power crisis caused by scarcity of coal, a coal laden freight train derailed on eastern dedicated freight corridor (DFC) in Uttar Pradesh's Etawah district on Saturday.
The incident took place at around 11:10am at New Ekdil station. According to eastern DFC officials, total 15 wagons loaded with 832 tonnes of coal derailed. The long haul rake of 59 wagons was heading toward Kalanaur in Haryana.
"Due to derailment up line going towards Delhi was obstructed while down line going towards Kanpur was clear for operation. Restoration of the up line had kicked started hours after the derailment. Accident relief trains from Kanpur and Agra were dispatched for service," said Neeraj Verma general manager operation DFC.
Last year in September, another wagon had derailed at the same stretch near New Ekdil railway station.
Meanwhile, railway has decided to cancel 657 Mail/Exp/Passenger trains to ensure priority routes for coal wagons and faster turnaround.
A total of 533 coal rakes have been put on duty.
