What’s Going To Happen
Will the real Southern Miss please stand up?
The Golden Eagles have the defense, the talent, and the offensive explosion to win the Conference USA title – or come close to it – but they haven’t been able to show off yet. They beat a nice Troy team, but that’s been about it.
UTEP hasn’t been a total pushover in its two losses, but the defense can’t come up with a third down stop, and the offense – despite a decent downfield passing game – isn’t coming up with enough consistent drives.
The biggest problem for the Miners is the lack of big play ability in the backfield. USM will turn it over, but it needs to be pressured for that to happen – and it won’t.
This is where the Golden Eagles start to turn the season around and go on a nice run, gearing up for a shootout next week against North Texas. UTEP will once again be just tough enough defensively to keep this from being a total wipeout, but it’s not going to generate the big plays needed on either side of the ball to change the momentum once the Golden Eagles get up early.
