Utah woman shares her meet-cute story with her husband. The internet can’t get over that he was dating her best friend at the time: ‘hella weird’

A Utah woman’s story about meeting her future husband at a school dance has sparked debate online. She says the man she married attended the event as her best friend’s date. TikTok creator Olivia Norton (_@olivianorton_) shared the story in a video showing herself dancing. The text overlay read, “When I met my husband because he was on a date with my best friend.” It added, “and told her that night I’ll marry him one day.”

The post quickly drew attention to the unusual setup. Some commenters questioned the circumstances, with one writing, “I had to read it three times just to be disappointed I understood it well the first time.”

Another commenter called the situation “hella weird.” A third person offered a different interpretation, writing that the friend may not have hit it off, calling what Norton did not necessarily “seedy.”

Norton says her friend is cool with it.

Norton later responded to the criticism with a second TikTok in which she provided additional context about how she and her husband, Jackson, got together. According to Norton’s account, the story began in January 2023 at a school dance.

She said her best friend, Morgan, attended the dance with Jackson. Norton said she encountered the pair at the event and immediately thought Jackson was attractive.

She recalled asking Morgan about her date before spending the rest of the evening with the couple. After the dance, Norton said she told Morgan she believed she would eventually marry Jackson. She then went home and told her parents that she had met the man she would marry.

Norton said she and Jackson began texting frequently after the dance. After about a week, she approached Morgan and disclosed that the two had been talking and that she was developing feelings for him.

Norton emphasized that she did not simply assume her friend was comfortable with the situation. She said she made sure Morgan did not have romantic feelings for Jackson and asked whether she was OK with Norton pursuing a relationship with him. According to Norton, Morgan supported the relationship and wanted the pair to date.

Norton also said the friendship has remained intact. She described Morgan as highly supportive and said she spoke at Norton’s wedding and continues to go on double dates with the couple. Norton added that Morgan encouraged her to provide additional context after seeing the reactions to the original video.

“I still, to this day, give her all the credit for me meeting my husband, and I am so grateful for it,” Norton said in the video. Norton also said Jackson has told her that asking Morgan to the dance ultimately led to him meeting Norton.

Not all Utah marriage stories have such happy endings. Not long before Norton shared her story, Utah police arrested a woman under suspicion of setting fire to the church where she was set to get married the next day.
