Utah State guard wears the No. 44 jersey because of his love for Wendy’s

Utah State men’s basketball team is playing for the Mountain West Conference Tournament title Saturday after the Aggies beat Colorado State, 62-50, on Friday night.

But one of the most interesting and silly stories to come out of Utah State’s victory has nothing to do with what happened on the court. It’s all about redshirt junior guard Marco Anthony’s uniform number.

Anthony — who had seven points, five assists and five rebounds against the Rams — wears No. 44. But as CBS Sports’ broadcast Friday explained, Anthony has an unusual reason for his number choice, and it all comes down to his love of Wendy’s.

As the broadcast noted, Anthony wears No. 44 because he’s a big fan of Wendy’s “4 for $4” meal deal. You’ve got to really love Wendy’s to celebrate one of its promotions with your jersey number.

When CBS Sports asked him this week if that’s actually the real reason he wears that number, Anthony reportedly said: “How could I make something like that up? It’s true.”

Unfortunately, because of the NCAA’s archaic rules about amateurism, Anthony can’t cash in on that with a sponsorship deal from Wendy’s — yet, anyway. But it’s still a goofy, fun fact about the player.

And Wendy’s obviously loved it.

Utah State will play San Diego State on Saturday night for the Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship at 6 p.m. ET on CBS.
