Stanford’s Brandon Wu gets to 6-under to take early lead at The Prestige

Utah senior Kyler Dunkle was off to a fast start at The Prestige to get to 6-under early, but it was Stanford’s Brandon Wu who finished strong Monday to take the lead with an opening-round 65.

Wu birdied three of his last six holes and had an eagle on the par-5, 537-yard 16th to get to 6 under for the day. He held a three-shot lead over Dunkle and Oklahoma State’s Viktor Hovland.

Dunkle opened with four birdies and an eagle on the par-4 11th, his second hole of the day, in his first six holes. Starting on the 10th tee, he shot 6-under-par 30 for nine holes on the Greg Norman course at PGA West. But a bogey on the second hole and a double on his last hole of the day left him with a 68.

Oklahoma State took the lead in the team competition at 6 under with three players inside the top 10. Austin Eckroat was tied for second with OSU teammate Hovland, Dunkle and LSU’S Garrett Barber at 3 under, and Matthew Wolff was tied for sixth at 2 under. LSU was one shot back.

Stanford’s A and B teams were tied for sixth, along with Utah.

No. 1 Oklahoma State is among 15 schools competing at The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab in La Quinta, Calif. The tournament will be livestreamed at Golfweek.com on Tuesday and Wednesday for the last two rounds.

Wu, a senior at Stanford, was a semifinalist in last year’s Western Amateur.
