USS Kidd arrives in Darwin for bombing anniversary

The USS Kidd has arrived in Darwin ahead of the Bombing of Darwin anniversary on Wednesday, February 19, 2014

The US Navy is continuing to build relations in Darwin, as part of America's increasing focus on the region.

The USS Kidd and its 300 plus member crew have arrived for Wednesday's memorial services marking the 72nd anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin.

As part of the visit, local residents have been able to tour the guided missile destroyer.

Executive Officer, Commander TJ Zerr said the US Navy has a special relationship with Darwin.

"We have some common values and we see the same sort of security concerns, but underlying it all I think we have a lot of cultural likenesses,'' Commander Zerr said.

"We are distinct in our own ways, but the same sailors from America routinely comment about Australia being one of the best places to stop ... a lot of people come to Darwin and it's universally talked about. It's just a fantastic place."
