Using your car indicators incorrectly or not at all could see you fined up to £5,000

Not indicating correctly or failing to indicate when on the roads could leave you with a hefty fine.

How to indicate when driving is one of the first things we learn behind the wheel.

However, this essential part of driving is often carried out incorrectly or sometimes not at all.

Not indicating is a bad driving habit that’s both dangerous and inconsiderate.

Failing to use your indicators can fall under the ‘careless and inconsiderate driving’ offence or be classed as driving without due care and attention.

While you might think choosing the right-hand lane on a roundabout or moving towards the lane markings are a clear enough signal, there’s no guarantee that other drivers will guess what you’re thinking and react.

It’s not just drivers that you put at risk by not indicating either; you could end up harming a pedestrian if they aren’t expecting you to turn in their direction.

Despite there not being a specific offence detailing when your indicators should and shouldn’t be used, failing to use them can fall under the ‘ careless and inconsiderate driving ’ offence or be classed as driving without due care and attention.

This offence could land you with a huge fine up to £5000 and up to nine points on your license.

You may even be disqualified from driving in serious cases.

Louis Rix, co-founder and COO at car finance platform CarFinance 247, said: “Indicating is a part of driving that we do without thought – but for those who fail to do so, the consequences could be fatal. If a pedestrian believes a road to be safe to cross, they may step out in front of a car.

“The risk involved with not indicating is a hefty fine - an expensive price to pay for the sake of forgetting to indicate.

"It’s one of the first things we learn when we start to drive, and an essential habit that we should practice throughout our lifetimes.”
