Using the internet as a force for good – the search begins

Organisations or individuals using the internet to do great work are being urged to consider entering, whether their project benefits the wider economy, local communities or UK internet users in general.

Last year's winners included: The Raspberry Pi Foundation, a charity aiming to promote the study of computer science and electronics in schools; and Hao2.eu Ltd, which provides employment and training for autistic people via the medium of 3D virtual world technology.

The awards are proudly organised by Nominet, the not for profit business responsible for the smooth and secure operation of the .uk internet infrastructure, which millions of businesses and consumers rely on as a critical part of the UK internet economy.

Now in their seventh year, the awards are an important demonstration of Nominet's public purpose commitment showcasing important and worthwhile projects and initiatives, which help to make the internet a force for good.

"The internet continues to have a transformational effect," said Lesley Cowley, CEO of Nominet. "The Nominet Internet Awards allow us to find and celebrate great up and coming internet projects taking place around the UK, which really make a difference to user's lives.

"Whether they help a small community get online or make an impact on a national scale, we look forward to receiving this year's entries and being inspired by the great things they've achieved."

The winners will be announced at a special ceremony on Thursday 4 July and will be promoted in the UK and internationally as examples of best practice. Supporters of the Nominet Internet Awards include MPs, industry leaders, civil institutions, businesses, public sector and academia.
