Using green cars alone ‘can’t fix’ global warming, says Environment Secretary

Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers said switching to green cars and other choices “can’t fix” global warming on its own.

The minister, who said she may change to an electric vehicle “in due course”, spoke out ahead of the Government’s new environment bill which ministers say has more “teeth” to force national improvements.

Ms Villiers said: “We recognise that individual choices can’t fix this issue by themselves.”

Asked about her own choices on Good Morning Britain, she said: “I have a regular petrol car like many others. I take flights, that’s inevitable in my job.”

She backed the royal family to continue flying, including in private jets. “I think the international work done by our royal family has huge benefits both in terms of campaigns like climate change and promoting the UK overseas.”

Defra did not respond to the Standard’s requests for more information about the bill, which was being presented to Parliament today.
