Usher wows with Apple Music Halftime Show at Super Bowl

Rihanna performs during the halftime show at the NFL Super Bowl 57 football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 12, 2023, in Glendale, Ariz.

Super Bowl LVIII was a spectacle filled with music and excitement. One of the standout performances came from none other than Usher, who used his platform to transport viewers to his beloved city, Atlanta. With his electrifying Apple Music Halftime Show performance, Usher celebrated Black Southern culture and showcased the vibrant entertainment scene in Atlanta.

Before the show began, a message flashed on the screen, warning the audience that Usher's performance might cause singing, dancing, sweating, gyrating, and even possible relationship issues. The stage was set with a nod to iconic Vegas performers like Elvis, complete with showgirls and Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics. It was a sight to behold, capturing the essence of Las Vegas while embracing Usher's Southern roots.

Usher's connection to Vegas runs deep. Last December, he concluded his 'My Way' Vegas Residency, which generated over $100 million in revenue. During the two-year residency at Park MGM, Usher not only solidified his brand but also opened up economic opportunities for Black performers in the Vegas entertainment industry. Showcasing a diverse range of talents, Usher brought a much-needed representation to a space that had long neglected Black creatives.

In addition to his Vegas residency, Usher has been a key figure in the Lovers and Friends music festival in Vegas, where he has headlined alongside more than 70 other Black musicians. These endeavors have not only propelled Usher's career but have also provided a platform for countless Black artists to shine.

The Super Bowl halftime show was a monumental moment for Usher, one he had been waiting for his entire life. In an interview following the announcement of his headlining performance, Usher emphasized his determination not to disappoint. And he didn't disappoint. In fact, he went above and beyond by authentically sharing the spotlight with Atlanta and proudly showcasing the city to the world.

When Atlanta hip-hop heavyweights Jermaine Dupri, Ludacris, and Lil Jon joined Usher on stage, the performance became even more electrifying. With roller-skating Black performers, pole dancers, and shimmying Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity members, the halftime show embodied the vibrant culture of Atlanta. Usher embraced the city's rich musical history and honored its traditions, making it an excitingly familiar cultural moment for viewers.

Even though Atlanta's HBCUs, such as Spelman, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, and Morris Brown, didn't perform at the halftime show, Usher made sure to shine a spotlight on another remarkable marching band. Jackson State University's Sonic Boom of the South, a Mississippi-based elite marching band, took the stage and elevated the southern culture fest. This inclusion highlighted the influence and talent that HBCUs bring to the world of music.

To add to the excitement, Usher released his ninth studio album, 'Coming Home,' just hours before his Super Bowl performance. By taking the audience on a musical journey from Vegas to Atlanta, Usher created an unforgettable experience. The unpaid halftime performance not only solidified Usher's already impressive legacy but also set the stage for his upcoming 'Past Present Future' North America tour, promising even more incredible moments to come.

Usher's Super Bowl performance was a celebration of his roots, his city, and the vibrant cultures that have shaped his music. By sharing his success with Atlanta and embracing Black Southern culture, Usher captivated millions of viewers and set the stage for a new chapter in his already illustrious career.
