Usher's recent Super Bowl Halftime Show was not just a spectacle of his career but also a tribute to R&B legends who paved the way before him. The 45-year-old R&B superstar revealed on The Breakfast Club that his performance was filled with subtle references to icons like Michael Jackson, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, and more.

During the show, Usher donned a single white glove as a nod to Michael Jackson, but he also incorporated moves inspired by James Brown and Marvin Gaye. His piano duet with Alicia Keys paid homage to Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, while his shirtless moment echoed Bobby Brown and his tank top look was reminiscent of Teddy Pendergrass.

Usher also included musical samples from The Jackson 5, Isley Brothers, Gap Band, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Zapp. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the artists who paved the way for him, stating, 'All of it is who I am, but in what I have done and who I am, I recognize all of the people that have really paved the way.'

The Super Bowl LVIII performance showcased Usher's journey from his early days to his current success, featuring guest appearances by Alicia Keys, Jermaine Dupri, Lil Jon, Ludacris, and will.i.am. The event became the most-watched telecast in U.S. history, with an average of 123.4 million viewers tuning in.

Usher expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to headline the halftime show, especially after his successful My Way Las Vegas residency. In an interview with PEOPLE, he shared his excitement, saying, 'The fact that I had this opportunity and someone who was in the position chose to give me the opportunity to entertain the world and do what I love to do after having such an incredible year here, specifically in Las Vegas, it feels so amazing. I feel honored, proud.'
