Usher and Shakira sign up as coaches for The Voice US

Following the news that Nicki Minaj will appear as a judge on American Idol, Usher and Shakira have signed up as coaches for the US edition of The Voice. The two stars will take the places of Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green on the next series of the TV singing competition.

None of this will affect the third season of The Voice, which is currently underway. But now that the show has been extended to two seasons each year, Aguilera and Green said they needed tofocus on their own careers before returning. Last week Aguilera announced the release of her seventh album, Lotus, and Green is developing a sitcom based on his life.

"As I have expressed since day one of the show, I am a singer and performer first," Aguilera said. "I am so excited to get back to that love … By pursuing my first passion of music during the break, I am also able to come back and offer even more to my team on The Voice in the future."

Green also emphasised his intention to return to the show later next year. "I will return for season five and will be watching season four," he said. "It's great to … give a host of other talent the chance to experience what a joy it is to be part of what is truly the best show of them all."
