Useful, fun items for telecommuters in Japan

Many companies have implemented work-from-home policies to combat the spread of the coronavirus, and it seems there will be growing opportunities for remote work even now that the state of emergency has been lifted. Here are some items that will make the experience more convenient and enjoyable.

People working at home use not only their computers but their tablets and smartphones as well. It's convenient to have a stand where you can put your tablet or smartphone when participating in long videoconferences, for example. Also, using a keyboard makes it easier to type on your smartphone, and if it's foldable, you can easily put it away when it's not needed.

"It's tiring to try and work on your tablet or phone while you're holding it at the same time. It's not only useful for work, but for online drinking parties as well," said Megumi Nakai, a public relations staffer for the major general store Loft.

Many computers have built-in cameras, but a lot of people probably don't like being seen from a lower angle when videoconferencing. At times like that, it's better to use a smartphone stand that you can adjust and fix in place rather than a computer. If you place it on a shelf or elsewhere, you can easily adjust it to a more preferred angle.

Have you ever ripped a piece of paper containing confidential information into tiny fragments by hand because you don't have access to a shredder? If that's too bothersome, try an electronic memo pad. You can write down the information on the screen with a specialized pen, and it can be easily deleted afterward. This will save paper as well.

It's important to differentiate between working hours and personal time.

"How about using an insulated mug or a cup holder filled with your favorite drink to signify which mode you're in?" Nakai said.

The insulated cup keeps your coffee warm, and the cup holder will keep your canned juice nice and cold. Also, by using the cup holder, condensation won't drip all over your desk.

Some items are more playful -- for example, there are popular memo stands made from blocks that you can assemble any way you want. You can use the blocks to form animals and create a workspace that's right for you. There are also a variety of sticky notes with athletes and other good-looking men drawn on them, making it difficult to recommend just one.

"Work is more fun if you have things that elevate your mood," Nakai said.
