Use your head during the midsummer Tokyo Games

As a measure against the heat of the midsummer 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the Tokyo metropolitan government has made a head-mounted parasol. It will be distributed at a test event this summer to verify its effectiveness in preventing conditions such as heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

The new parasol, made of material that shields light and heat, is worn in the same way as a Japanese traditional straw hat. The special benefit of this parasol is that, since both hands are free, it is easier to do things like watching sporting events outdoors.

"We'd like to make sure that not only high-tech but also analog methods such as planting trees along the streets and using parasols are effective in combating heat," said Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike, who showed a prototype at a regular press conference on Friday.
