Use our tool to see the impact of climate change across the course of your lifetime

Climate change. It's a phrase we've come to hear almost every single day.

But, what does it really mean? What is actually causing it, what is happening because of it, and what can we do to stop it?

Bristol Live's #Do1Thing campaign aims to answer every single one of those questions.

You can find out some of the causes of climate change here, and get a taste of what's happening in the South West, and here is a list of small changes you can start making in your life today that will make a difference.

And, if you needed any more encouraging to start combating climate change, you can use our tool below to find out what the world will look like as you get older if attempts to halt climate change don't begin right now.

We can expect warmer and drier summers in the UK in the future - but how warm, and how dry depends on where you live, and what action we take on climate change.

Bristol Live has created a new tool that allows you to see exactly what the climate will be like where you live in the future.

You can put in your postcode and date of birth and see a personalised climate future.

The widget shows how much wetter or drier your part of the UK can expect to be compared to the end of the 20th century - and the amount that the sea level is expected to rise on the nearest bit of UK coastline to you.

What will the climate look like in your lifetime?

The figures have been taken from the Met Office’s official UK climate projections.

They correspond to two different climate change scenarios.

The “low emission scenario” - known as RCP2.6 - is a world where there is a major shift in climate policies.

That would mean all countries - including developing ones - taking action in the next few years to reduce their emissions.

Under that scenario, global CO2 emissions peak by 2020 and decline to around zero by 2080.

20 things you can do to help tackle climate change

Under the “high emission” scenario - which scientists call RCP 8.5 - emissions continue to increase rapidly throughout the 21st century, with little or no action taken to stop the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere rising.

It is impossible to predict the future, but scientists can calculate what is likely to happen if certain conditions are met.

That’s why, as well as showing the median average figure, the widget gives a range of values that are likely to happen.

We’re releasing this interactive as part of our #Do1Thing initiative.

Here at Bristol Live we are working with our country-wide network of websites and newspapers to encourage our loyal readers to make one small change to save our world for future generations.

We don’t expect you to make colossal changes to your life.

Our message to you is simple and is underpinned by the hashtag #Do1Thing. Obvious isn’t it?

We want to ask you to make one small change today that collectively will make a massive difference for all our tomorrows.

There are lots of ideas here for how you can make a difference.
