The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Administration (FNA) has announced that 33 SNAP-authorized retailers in the Los Angeles area have been charged following a coordinated federal enforcement operation targeting alleged fraud within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). According to the USDA, investigators from the USDA Office of Inspector General (OIG) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed search warrants at multiple retail locations on July 2, 2026. The investigation focused on allegations of benefit trafficking and the illegal sale of items that cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits.
Retailers Face Permanent Disqualification and Criminal Penalties
Federal officials allege that six retailers exchanged SNAP benefits for cash, while another 27 accepted SNAP benefits in exchange for prohibited items, including alcoholic beverages and vaping products. The USDA said retailers found violating SNAP rules may face permanent disqualification from the program, substantial civil penalties, and, in some cases, federal criminal charges. The operation resulted in at least one arrest, and officials emphasized that protecting taxpayer dollars and ensuring benefits are used as intended remain top enforcement priorities.
USDA Continues Nationwide SNAP Fraud Enforcement
The Food and Nutrition Administration conducts tens of thousands of retailer reviews and nearly 50,000 undercover compliance visits each year to identify potential SNAP violations. The agency encourages anyone who suspects SNAP fraud to report it through its fraud reporting system and reminds both retailers and beneficiaries to follow program rules to help protect the integrity of food assistance benefits.
