The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the first round of Fiscal Year 2026 Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grants, awarding funding to 52 projects as part of a record nearly $20 million investment planned for the year. The grants are designed to increase the use of locally produced foods in school meal programs while creating new economic opportunities for American farmers and food producers. At the same time, USDA opened applications for a separate $20 million in National School Lunch Program Equipment Assistance Grants to help schools modernize kitchen facilities and prepare healthier meals.

Grants Support Local Food and Healthier School Meals

The Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant Program helps schools expand local food purchasing, strengthen partnerships with nearby farmers, and provide students with agricultural education opportunities. Meanwhile, the National School Lunch Program Equipment Assistance Grants will help eligible schools purchase or upgrade kitchen equipment needed to prepare fresh, minimally processed meals that align with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025–2030. USDA officials say both initiatives are intended to strengthen local food systems while improving the quality of school meals.

Schools and Communities Can Learn More Through USDA

Since launching in 2013, the Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant Program has awarded more than $115 million to support over 1,250 projects across all 50 states and several U.S. territories. Schools, community organizations, and local partners interested in future funding opportunities or the National School Lunch Program Equipment Assistance Grants can find additional information through the USDA Food and Nutrition Administration, including eligibility requirements and application guidance.
