USC gives Tre Madden the 'pro' treatment when it comes to injuries and rest

Nov. 06--USC tailback Tre Madden is in the final stretch.

The fifth-year senior, who was sidelined because of injuries for much of his college career, has missed only one game this season because of knee soreness.

Interim coach Clay Helton is intent on making sure Madden is available for the Trojans' four remaining regular-season games.

"We treat him like a pro and try to protect him and get him to the game," Helton said after Thursday's practice.

Madden's workload is light on Tuesday and Wednesdays. Helton said it increases a bit on Thursdays.

The strategy is paying off.

Madden rushed for a touchdown on a fourth-and-two play and also picked up a key first down late in the fourth quarter in the Trojans' victory at California last week.

After the game, Helton described Madden's third-down play and junior Justin Davis' third-down execution on the same drive as "grown-man runs."

"I definitely have that mentality when I have to get those hard-earned yards," Madden said outside the locker room.

Madden is expected to again share carries with Davis and freshman Ronald Jones II on Saturday night against Arizona.

Madden has rushed for 418 yards and five touchdowns. He also has 14 receptions, one for a touchdown.

Helton said Madden has been productive in practice even when he is not rotating in for reps.

"He's focused on what's going on and playing the play mentally," Helton said. "Plus, he's coaching the young kids.

"He's got [freshman Aca'Cedric] Ware in his hip pocket. He's got Ronald Jones in his pocket and Dominic Davis."
