Match report

The United States advance to the knockout stage with one game to spare after a dominant display against the Socceroos.

Here's our match report.

Full time! The US are through to the knockouts!

Team USA are through to the knockout round after just two matches for the first time in World Cup history.

Game drawing to a close...

Not much happening. Balogun and McKennie come off to loud applause.

6 minutes of added time

Team USA have certainly qualified for the knockouts.

Socceroos looking toothless

Australia are getting plenty of balls into the area, but there just aren't enough yello shirts to create any real danger.

The great George Weah is shown in the stands, but his son Timothy (who plays for the US) is on the bench today.

Australia push forward

The Socceroos have most of the ball now and are pushing forward, but they are yet to find a way through the US defence.

Volpato goes down holding his face

Volpato falls to the ground holding his face, perhaps trying to get a second red for Robinson, but the ref is not impressed.

There was some, accidental contact between the two, but no big deal.

'Vegemite free zone'

This one will hurt more than the score.

Berhalter comes on for Pepi

Having said that, the coach makes his first move, and Berhalter is on for the tiring Pepi.

Still no US subs

We're off again after drinks and some watering of the pitch.

Pochettino is yet to make any changes to his squad.

Metcalfe shoots from a distance

Another half-chance for the visitors, with Freese saving Metcalfe's long-range effort.

The hydration break comes up, and it's a welcome time-out for USA who have gone a little quiet in this second half.

Chance for Australia!

McKennie plays a brilliant pass towards Balogun, who only has to steer it goalwards, but he fluffs it instead.

Australia promptly counter, with Irankunda racing into the box. He centres and Volpato fires way over the crossbar.

It looks like another Australian was tripped in the area, but VAR is not interested.

Leckie pulls a hamstring

Leckie's hamstring goes and the match is over for the veteran Australian.

Volpato comes on for only his second Australia cap.

Robinson booked

Robinson is shown a yellow card for a late tackle on Italiano.

Rare Australia attack... ends with Balogun counter

Australia finally attempt to move forward but the ball is intercepted and a rapid US counter-attack sees Balogun charging towards goal -- until his shot is blocked for a corner.

USA in control

The second half has started much as the first one ended, with Pochettino's men moving confidently and Australia struggling to produce anything.

We're off again!

Australia's Petkovic has wasted no time to make three changes.

Touré, Velupillay and Burgess, the own-goal-scorer, make way for Geria, Irankunda and Metcalfe.
