USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, Oct. 8: There’s a new middleweight captain now

With his decisive win in the UFC 243 main event this past Saturday, Israel Adesanya is moving up in the world.

Not only did Adesanya pick up the undisputed middleweight title with a second-round knockout of champion Robert Whittaker, but he ascended to the top of the 185-pound rankings. It also earned him a couple spots up the ladder on the pound-for-pound list.

But how far down did Whittaker drop with the loss, and who settled into the No. 2 spot? And who else is lurking not far behind as a potential challenger to new champ Adesanya?

Check out all the updates for that division and more in the latest edition of the USA Today/MMA Junkie rankings.
