USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, July 9: Jorge Masvidal flies up welterweight ranks

It took all of five seconds for Jorge Masvidalto soar up the welterweight rankings.

Well, okay, actually Masvidal’s climb to the top has been the slowest of grinds, one 16 years in the making.

But a UFC record, five-second flying knee knockout has a way of making up for things in a hurry.

Masvidal’s knockout of Ben Askren has been a clear career-changer, as fans are still talking about his sensational knockout days after a memorable UFC 239. He’s moved up to No. 4 in our welterweight rankings, not far at all off a shot at Kamaru Usman’s welterweight belt.

Meanwhile, Jan Blachowicz’s knockout of Luke Rockhold gets him into the top 15 at light heavyweight, at No. 15. Rockhold is now out of the rankings.

There are no changes atop the pound-for-pound polls. Jon Jones’ split-decision win over Thiago Santos is not enough to put him ahead of Khabib Nurmagomedov. And, what, did you think we were going to drop Amanda Nunes out of the No. 1 women’s spot after she knocked out Holly Holm?

To see those updates and more, check out the latest edition of our rankings.
