USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie MMA rankings, May 7: ‘Cowboy’ riding high

Donald Cerrone has previously come up short when it mattered most, but “Cowboy” continues to bring himself back up to the highest level every time.

After an incredibly disappointing 2-4 run in the UFC’s welterweight division, Cerrone made the move back down to 155 pounds and has since notched impressive victories over young gun Alexander Hernandez and, this past weekend, over durable slugger Al Iaquinta.

With his latest win, Cerrone now moves to No. 4 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie MMA lightweight rankings, supporting his plan of booking his next outing as either a title fight or, as a backup plan, a fan-friendly contest with Conor McGregor. It also matches the highest mark Cerrone has ever enjoyed in our rankings, as he was also at No. 4 ahead of December 2015 title fight with then-champ Rafael dos Anjos.

After this past weekend’s action – and ahead of another busy weekend with the UFC, Bellator, PFL, ONE Championship and LFA all in action – check out the latest MMA Junkie list.
