USA TODAY releases updated SEC power rankings

The SEC is far and away college football’s best conference this season, with five teams in the top-ten of the Amway Coaches Poll.

Sorting those five teams in a power ranking is tough, but usually gets easier each week as teams’ strengths and weaknesses become more glaring. This season, though, it’s been hard to get a read on which of those programs should be at No. 1, as all have looked dominant at times. The one that I’m still not sold on is Florida, which has a very good defense but an offense that leaves me less than impressed.

Tyler Horka of USA TODAY recently released his updated SEC power rankings following week five of the college football season.

At the top, he has Alabama (1), followed by Georgia (2), LSU (3), Auburn (4) and Florida (5).

For Georgia, Horka had this to say:

The Bulldogs were rewarded for their defeat of Notre Dame with a week off. And for the second week in a row, Georgia received one No. 1 vote in the Amway Coaches Poll.

Somebody must like the chances of Georgia’s No. 1 rushing offense in the SEC running rampant on Alabama’s seemingly porous defensive front in a potential title game showdown.

This Saturday will tell us a lot about Horka’s No. 4 and 5 teams, as Florida hosts Auburn in the Swamp.

The week after, Florida visits LSU for another big time showdown. The Gators very well could have two losses on their record two weeks from now.
