It’s the position on the football field that has the most impact of any. The position has morphed into one that has one of the most athletic players on the field touching the ball every play and often making things happen in a dual-threat variety. It’s the quarterback position.
If you have a great one, you’ve got a chance to do some pretty special things. Have a mediocre or underperforming one in today’s game, and you better have the best talent facilities and tradition can buy surrounding him to make up for it.
Enter stage left Justin Fields. In just his second year slinging the ball around the field in Columbus, he has turned into the Heisman front runner and looking to give things a run towards being the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The average draft class is lucky to have one franchise quarterback, but this year's cycle includes at least two. Here's the latest college QB rankings. https://t.co/Edz6y9IU30

USA TODAY’s Paul Myerberg has taken notice and unleashed his ranking of the best college quarterbacks so far in the college game for 2020, and you’ll probably like where it has the Buckeye signal-caller. Well, maybe. Anything less than No. 1 would be a disappointment right?
NEXT … Justin Fields’ ranking in USA TODAY QBs
No. 1 – Justin Fields

Yep, USA TODAY has Fields now ranked as the top quarterback in the entire college game. Ahead of Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence who came into the season as everyone’s lock to win the Heisman and set up huge expectations as the top overall pick in the draft.
What Myerberg says about Fields’ standing
“Fields played deeper into Ohio State’s 49-27 win against Rutgers than expected, as an expected romp against one of the weaker teams in the Big Ten turned tighter in the second half. After throwing for 314 yards and five scores, Fields now has as many touchdown passes (11) as incompletions through three games. With Lawrence missing two games following his COVID-19 diagnosis, Fields rises to the top of the list.”
What we say
Fields has exceeded even the most optimistic expectations. Three games in and he’s completed an outrageous 86.7 percent of his passes, is very efficiently averaging over 300 yards of offense, and — get this — has more touchdowns he’s responsible for (13) than incompletions on the year (11).
So yeah, I don’t know how you put anyone else up there with Fields. Alabama’s Mac Jones has also been fantastic, but he’s not quite at the same level with the Buckeye gunslinger. There’s still a lot of time to go in this season (we hope) but right now Fields is the best in the game. Hands down.
