USA Today Power Rankings peg Washington as a bottom-three team in the NFL

It comes as no surprise, but the Washington Redskins once again rank among the worst of the worst in the NFL.

After the Redskins brutal 24-3 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday — a game in which Washington saw one quarterback throw three interceptions after they pulled the other because he wasn’t playing well enough — the franchise as a whole is getting readjusted to what it feels like to be at rock bottom. One of the joys of being at the bottom is not having to scroll very far when NFL Power Rankings are released. At least fans can get in and get out quickly when looking for an update on their team.

USA Today’s Touchdown Wire released an updated power ranking on Monday, and somehow, the Redskins actually moved up one spot to No. 30, sitting ahead of the Miami Dolphins, who are tanking, and the New York Jets, whose QB is out with mononucleosis.

At this point, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden is grasping at straws and probably wondering what the local real estate market is like. His decision to bench quarterback Case Keenum in favor of first-round rookie Dwayne Haskins went about as well as expected against the Giants in a 24-3 loss. Against what has been one of the NFL’s worst coverage units, Haskins looked out of place in the pocket and struggled with his reads — something you’d expect if you’d watched his Ohio State tape.

Throwing three picks in 17 attempts shows how far he has to go, and the final score shows how broken this team is. Were it not for the Dolphins, Gruden’s team might be the NFL’s worst.

A matchup against the top-ranked Patriots this upcoming week is unlikely to offer any relief, so it’s tough to say that things might get better from here. It’s looking like it’s going to be another long season in Washington, and there is no end, nor answers in sight.
