USA's most exclusive hiking spot could be about to open to more visitors

One of the USA's most exclusive hiking spots could be about to open to more visitors.

Tucked away in Coyote Buttes North, Arizona, right by the state's border with Utah, The Wave has long been drawing in hikers from around the world thanks to its colourful sandstone rock formation and eye-catching landscape.

It's approximately a six-mile round trip for hikers.

At the moment you can only visit if you have a permit, and the state only gives out 20 permits a day. 10 are given out online, 10 are given to walk-ins, with the 'lottery' opening at 9am Mondays to Fridays.

Unsurprisingly demand is high for these, with authorities revealing that over 160,000 people applied in recent years for what was a total of roughly 7,000 permits.

But it could be set to get a little easier for those hoping to tick The Wave off the bucket list.

As a result of the high demand for the permits, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which looks after the region, is currently considering increasing the number of visitors it allows daily up to 96 people.

The BLM says that "the proposed change would increase recreational opportunities and visitor access while preserving wilderness values", and is currently opening up the discussion to the public for feedback.

Whether the increase in visitors comes into force will be dependent on the response they receive.

However, it's worth noting that the daily limit of visitors has always been in place to protect the incredible rock formation and there has been some opposition arguing that increasing the number of visitors could contribute to some damage of the delicate sandstone features.

Still, at this stage it's simply a proposal to increase the number of permits, with the consultation period being held until the end of June.
