USA beat Australia to achieve World Cup feat for first time in almost 100 years

  • A Cameron Burgess own goal handed USA the lead, and they doubled their advantage shortly before halftime through Alex Freeman after a VAR review.
  • USA have now won both of their World Cup matches in 2026, the first time they have won back-to-back games at a World Cup since the first-ever tournament in 1930.
  • They look set to qualify top of Group B, which could hand the co-hosts a favorable last-32 draw.
  • The US have never progressed beyond the last-16, but could be set to go further this time following a strong start to the tournament, with their final group game against Turkey scheduled for 25 June.
