US women's football pays tribute to "unmatched" journalist Grant Wahl after sad death

Grant Wahl, a prominent football journalist from the United States has died whilst covering the World Cup in Qatar.

He collapsed at the start of extra time in the Argentina-Netherlands game on Friday night, just a day after Wahl celebrated his 48th birthday with friends.

Early reports suggest he may have had a heart attack, but this has yet to be officially confirmed.

His contributions to both the men's and women’s game were “unmatched” as tributes continue to pour in from USNWT players.

A statement from the National Women's Soccer League was released, said: “We are heartbroken by the news of Grant Wahl’s death. His commitment to sharing the stories of our beautiful game was unmatched, but more importantly, his integrity, thoughtfulness and kindness were central to the way he lived.

“Our most sincere condolences to Grant’s family and those close to him at this indescribably sad time.”

Further messages of condolences and tributes to Wahl continue to pour in from high-profile players as former US international and soccer icon Abby Wambach’s tweet read: “This is heart breaking for me for so many reasons. Grant Wahl and soccer are inextricably linked. I have looked to Grant and his work for decades.

“The soccer story here in the US has Grant’s name all over it. We will miss you Grant and we can’t stop thinking about your family.”

NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman wrote: “Grant was one of the people who has taken the time to make sure I feel welcome in this world of Women’s soccer. He was a special person.”

While Houston Dash striker Shea Groom thanked him for “all that you did for our game” as San Diego Wave FC called it “an unfathomable loss.”
