US weather latest: New York skyline lit up by forked lightning

Lightning and thunderstorms struck New York on Thursday night, with dramatic bolts lighting up the city skyline.

The full force of the storm was documented by New Yorkers on social media, as hues of purple and black were struck with a flash of bright white.

Several photographers captured the spectacular lightning strikes, with shots of the Empire State Building lit up by a bolt of lightning.

The storm's beauty was enhanced by the setting sun, which cast an orange glow over the skyline.

New York State previously issued lightning safety tips which advised residents to seek shelter and stay alert.

They also asked members of the public to get emergency help if they came across anyone who had been struck by lightning and in the case of multiple victims, to treat those unconscious first, as they are at the greatest risk.
