US Vice-President Mike Pence to make official visit to Ireland in September

US Vice-President Mike Pence is set to visit Ireland this September, it has been reported.

This will be his first trip to our shores in an official capacity and he is expected to meet Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

A meeting with President Higgins is also being considered, The Irish Times reports.

The visit is expected to take place during the first week of September and will last three days.

Mr Pence, who is an Evangelical Christian, has strong Irish roots, his maternal grandfather came from Tubbercurry in Co Sligo and emigrated to the US.

And his mother’s family hail from from Doonbeg in Co Clare, where President Trump recently visited.

Earlier this year at a St Patrick's Day event, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that he looked forward to welcoming Mr Pence - and his mother, an extremely proud Irish American - to Ireland very soon.

Mr Pence confirmed that planning was officially underway for the visit.
