US TV reporter reacts to news that Irish fishermen 'won' after previous Russia report

A top US reporter has reacted after Irish fishermen "won" their dispute with Russia

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow went viral after sharing a report on the situation last week.

It came after Russia had announced it was set to launch rockets off Ireland's south-west coast with four "live fire" exercises in February.

And the story quickly gained a global audience with Maddow sharing a clip of an RTE News bulletin where local Irsih fishermen explained why they are going to stop the Russian war games.

She explained: "There's not much Ireland itself can do about it, Ireland, I mean no offence, do not have much of a navy, Ireland literally has no military radar in the entire country. They don't have military radar, they've navigational radar but no military radar.

"Ireland does not have a single ship that's capable of launching a helicopter off of it, they just don't have that kind of military capacity.

"So what can Ireland do? Well, do you know what Ireland does have to defend itself? It has very annoyed fisherman."

But the crisis was averted last weekend when Russia announced their plans to relocate their military drills so they take place outside Ireland's Exclusive Economic Zone.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney said he had received assurances from his Russian counterpart Army General Sergey Shoygu about the controversial missile drills.

He tweeted on Saturday evening: "This week I wrote to my counterpart, the Minister of Defence of Russia, to request a reconsideration of naval exercises off the Irish coast.

"This evening I received a letter confirming the Russian exercises will be relocated outside of Ireland’s EEZ.

"I welcome this response."

And MSNBC star Maddow reacted to the latest development by sharing a tweet from both Coveney and CNN reporter Donie O'Sullivan confirming the Irish fisherman had "won" their battle.

She also shared a quip from American journalist Tony Messenger, who joked: "When I grow up, I want to be an Irish fisherman."
