US TV host Jimmy Kimmel praises Leo Varadkar for returning to medicine to help fight coronavirus

American TV host Jimmy Kimmel has heaped praise on Taoiseach Leo Varadkar for his decision to return to medicine.

The host of the popular Jimmy Kimmel show praised Varadkar for his decision and compared it to US President Trump's response to the global pandemic.

In his opening monologue, Kimmel said: "The Prime Minsiter of England is very ill. Boris Johnson is in intensive care right now with coronavirus,

"And the Prime Minister of Ireland is at the hospital too. But he's there to work.

"Prime Minister Leo Varadkar renewed his medical license so he could volunteer as a doctor.

"Meanwhile our President (Trump) is volunteering as a doctor by arbitrarily prescribing Lupus pills and fish tank chemicals at every press conference he holds."

Kimmel slammed Trump's response to the crisis and accuses the controversial US President of having ulterior motives when promoting the medicines.

He said: "Well now it turns out Trump's inexplicable passion for this drug might be a bit more explicable.

"Turns out he has a financial stake in the country that makes the drug.

"Of course he does. Do we really think he went out of his way to learn to say hydroxychloroquine for no reason."

This high praise comes as Leo announced that he would rejoin the medical register to help out during the coronavirus crisis.

The Taoiseach, who worked as a doctor for seven years, will work one session - about half a day - a week for the health service as a "gesture of good will" to the heroes fighting on the front line in hospitals across Ireland.

The Fine Gael leader rejoined the register in March and will work in a role that suits his qualifications.

He is expected to help out in a phone role and will assess patients over the phone - this is after a HSE recruitment drive which started last month.
