US travel ban set to be lifted for double jabbed Brits after 18 months

Double jabbed Brits are set to be allowed to travel into the United States within weeks as President Joe Biden lifts the Coronavirus travel ban.

The White House is expected to announce shortly that all vaccinated passengers from the UK and EU will be able to enter the country from November.

The announcement comes during Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s trip to the US and has allegedly come as a surprise to a number of British officials.

Before the Covid pandemic, more than 4m British nationals flew to the US every year but travel restrictions have significantly lowered this number over the past 18 months.

A blanket ban imposed by Donald Trump at the height of the pandemic has kept tourists and business people kept away from the states for a year and a half.

Downing Street sources had said the PM would make an “impassioned” push to the US to allow double jabbed Brits to travel directly into America, however, the announcement has come earlier than expected for many Government insiders.

President Biden had pledged to ease restrictions when he travelled to the UK for the G7 summit in June, but his failure to do so had left many British travellers frustrated.

It is expected that those who have received two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be allowed into the US, despite the jab not being approved for use in the country.

White House Covid-19 Response Coordinator Jeff Zients said: "Most importantly, foreign nationals flying to the U.S. will be required to be fully vaccinated."

The US administration is expected to announce the change later today, marking a significant boost for the travel industry.

Though exact timings of the lifting of restrictions have yet to be announced, it is thought that the relaxation will come in time for people to travel over Thanksgiving around November 25.
