US to Appoint Ambassador to Israel Soon

US former Deputy Secretary of State Thomas R. Nides (Reuters)

US President Joe Biden is expected to nominate veteran diplomat and Wall Street executive Thomas Nides to become the next ambassador to Israel, according to informed sources.

Nides' appointment comes in the wake of a ceasefire reached last week after 11 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the worst clashes in years.

The Biden administration faced criticism for its lack of high-level diplomatic representation in Israel during the recent conflict, which prompted the White House to prioritize the selection.

It was not immediately clear when the White House plans to announce the appointment, but a source familiar with the matter told Reuters that it would happen soon.

Nides is currently an executive director at Morgan Stanley and previously served as deputy secretary of state for management and resources in the Obama administration.

His number one competition for the position was Robert Wexler, a former Florida congressman with extensive experience in the Middle East.
