US Senate Passes Resolution to Hold Assad Regime Accountable for War Crimes

US Capitol (AFP)

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed a resolution that holds the Syrian regime accountable for war crimes, marking the 10 year anniversary of the Syrian conflict.

Senators Jim Risch and Bob Menendez welcomed the committee’s passage of the legislation.

The resolution condemns the Assad regime’s atrocities against its people and reaffirms the US commitment to seek a political solution to the Syrian conflict.

It also commends the bravery of Syrian human rights defenders who have courageously documented the atrocities committed by the Assad regime and its Russian and Iranian backers over the course of the conflict.

The resolution reaffirms accountability for the regime’s atrocities through the implementation of the Caesar Act.

This includes a commitment to “continuing efforts to hold the Assad regime and its backers accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

For his part, Risch said: “I am pleased that the committee passed S. Res. 99, a resolution I co-sponsored with Senator Menendez marking the 10 year anniversary of the Syrian conflict.”

“This resolution reaffirms our support for the Syrian people, emphasizes the policy of the United States to seek a political solution to this prolonged conflict, and highlights the need for accountability for all of the crimes committed by Assad and his Russian and Iranian backers.”
