US Senate Fails to Stop Arms Sales to 3 Arab Countries

The US Senate has failed to muster enough votes to override President Donald Trump's vetoes of Congressional resolutions which had blocked arms sales to three Arab countries.

The president last week vetoed three separate resolutions, which would have stopped some 8 billion dollars worth of weapons commerce. He had declared the sales an emergency to confront the Iranian threat.

So despite bipartisan votes this month, the effort to override Trump's third use of his veto powers since taking office fell well short.

The deals include arms sales to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

In one of his letters to the Senate, Trump said the Congressional resolutions harm Washington’s important relations with its allies and partners.

Instead, he called for confronting the Iranian role.
