US rock legends Pixies announce surprise visit to Cardiff's world famous Spillers Records

Fans of American alternative rock legends Pixies were sent into meltdown when it was announced the band will be making a surprise appearance at Cardiff's Spillers Records.

The Boston four-piece - first formed in 1986 and credited with inspiring the likes of Nirvana and Radiohead - will pop into the intimate venue in the city's Morgan Arcade on Friday, September 13 to celebrate the release of their latest album, Beneath The Eyrie.

The group, led by frontman Black Francis, will be signing copies of the records at 1pm, prior to their gig at the Motorpoint Arena later that evening.

And, as you'd expect, their fans went wild when the news broke on Spillers' Twitter page informing them a limited number of people would be able to attend - provided they reserve themselves a space.

"This is amazing! One of my favourite bands ever! Went a bit mad and ordered a CD as well as the coloured vinyl. Cannot wait!" posted Alessandro Carpanini.

Sue Atkins added, "Oh my god, that’s SO exciting! I’m so chuffed for you guys, I just wish we could be there. I bloody LOVE them!"

"Count me in," "Sign me up" and "This is amazing" were among some of the other messages posted, the announcement receiving hundreds of 'likes' from UK fans as far flung as Scotland.

The signing - which, unsurprisingly, sold out in next to no time - also continues the affinity the Boston band developed with Wales when they recorded their first new music in 22 years at Monmouth's  Rockfield Studios in 2013.

Since their beginnings, the group have so far released six albums, split and reunited and released such classic tracks as Where Is My Mind, Here Comes Your Man, Debaser and Monkey Gone To Heaven.
