No one else was injured in the incident, police said.

A homicide investigation is ongoing, with no suspect currently in custody.

Witnesses of the incident told US website TMZ they noticed a white SUV in the vicinity at the time of the shooting.

The Chicago Sun Times meanwhile reported the Faces rapper was dropping his girlfriend off somewhere at the time he was struck with gunfire.

He lived in the neighbourhood where the shooting occurred, the publication claimed.

The artist was well known for his 2013 collaboration with Chief Keef, titled Chiefin Keef, with the star also belonging to his music label, Glory Boyz Entertainment.

He also grew a large following on YouTube from his music videos for tracks Faces, Got the Mac and Know Who I Am.
