US Pro National Championships: Artem Shmidt tops Larry Warbasse in elite men's time trial

Artem Shmidt (Netcompany Ineos) powers to the elite men's time trial title in the 2026 US Pro Road Championships.

Artem Shmidt (Netcompany Ineos) led from the first time check to the finish to end atop the standings in the elite men's individual time trial at the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships in Charleston, West Virginia on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old held off two Tudor riders, Larry Warbasse - who finished 10 seconds off the pace - and Will Barta, who was 15 seconds adrift.

Averaging 52.23kph on the 33.4km course, Shmidt knocked 42 seconds off his winning time from 2025 to win his second straight title.

"It was pretty windy out there to be honest but I mean I was able to come away with the win so I feel pretty good now, but during the moment it did not feel good at all," said Schmidt in an interview with USA Cycling posted on social media.

After taking to the course alongside the Kanawha River among the early riders Warbasse settled into the hot seat with a time of 38:32.06. Teammate Barta in the second wave was the biggest threat to that time until Schmidt, as defending champion, rolled out last.

The 22-year-old stamped his authority on the race against the clock through the first lap, delivering the quickest intermediate split and holding his advantage to the line and ending the suspense for a disappointed Warbasse.

"Not gonna lie, I was hoping for the jersey. But today, I have to be content with 2nd," said Warbasse in a post on social media, also congratulating Schmidt on the win.
