US presidential inauguration: Irish viewers have hilarious Garth Brooks reaction after Joe Biden's speech

Joe Biden wowed the world this afternoon with a thundering inauguration speech.

The 46th US President preached the importance of unity, and of healing, in an address that was clearly designed to begin the American healing process after four chaotic years of Donald Trump.

But while observers across the world were busy congratulating Mr Biden on his inauguration, some Irish viewers were crestfallen by the lack of Irish references in his speech.

The 78-year-old has become known for talking up his Irish roots at every opportunity – but there was no mention of the Emerald Isle today.

What we did get, though, was a performance from Garth Brooks – the legendary US singer who's beloved the world over but who has a complicated (to say the least) relationship with Ireland.

One eagle-eyed viewer tweeted: "In a dramatic turn of events, Joe Biden has turned on Ireland by giving us not! one! poet! and making us all recall the Five Nights in Croke Park debacle."

The incident in question scarred the country back in 2014, when Brooks was due to play five nights in Croke Park before withdrawing his appearances in dramatic circumstances after a row with Dublin City Council.

Over 400,000 refunds were issued – and thousands of cowboy hats went unsold – after Dublin City Council told the country singer he could only have three nights in Croke Park, rather than the planned five.

In response, the Oklahoma-born star insisted: five nights, or none at all.

Irish people, as we all know, have long memories when it comes to these types of incidents – and the truth of that was borne out by another tweeter, who wrote: "Can't believe Joe Biden is entertaining Garth Brooks after he pulled that stunt with Ireland."

Irish people are unlikely to hold Biden's Irish omission against him, though – the Taoiseach was one of thousands to extend his congratulations to the veteran Democrat.

We hope he's able to make it over, as planned, for an Irish visit before too long.
