Paschal Donohoe will invite US President Joe Biden to visit Ireland when he meets America’s Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, in London this weekend.
Ms Yellen will be in London for the G7 Summit of world leaders taking place in the UK.
Mr Donohoe will be there as our Minister for Finance and head of the Eurogroup of EU finance ministers.
And while he is meeting with Ms Yellen one-on-one, he told the Irish Mirror that he will be extending the invitation to President Biden to visit Ireland again.
Mr Donohoe said: “There is a standing invitation to President Biden to visit Ireland at any point and I’ll of course add my voice to that invitation.
“It would be great to see President Biden in Ireland and as he deepens his engagement with Europe I know that he would be really welcome here.
“I’ll be re-extending that invitation to Mr Biden and I’ll be extending that opportunity to Secretary Yellen too.”
President Biden has repeatedly spoken about his love for the ‘old sod’ as he alway acknowledges Ireland as his ancestral home.
He has relatives from both his mother and father’s side of the family still living in Carlingford, Co Louth, and Ballina in Co Mayo.
It is expected that an official State visit to Ireland will come “sooner rather than later” according to one Government Minister the Mirror spoke to on Wednesday morning.
The improving situation with Covid on both sides of the Atlantic has led to speculation that the trip could take place sometime this year.
