US President Joe Biden needs to step in to resolve Brexit trade crisis, says Labour's Aodhan O Riordain

US President Joe Biden needs to step in to resolve the latest Brexit trade crisis.

Labour TD, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, believes the friend of Ireland and leader of the US can intervene and resolve the growing diplomatic row between the EU, Ireland and Britain.

The UK caused a diplomatic ruckus this week when they unilaterally moved to extend a trade exemption for goods going into Northern Ireland from the British mainland.

New EU rules and standards were supposed to kick in from April 1 in line with the Brexit agreement, but Boris Johnson has decided to push this out to October.

However, it appears he decided not to ask the Irish Government or our EU colleagues for permission and this has caused a new political storm.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney, upped the ante when he said it showed that the UK Government “simply cannot be trusted” in ongoing negotiations.

Mr Ó Ríordáin has suggested that President Biden should intervene.

He said: “We feel that this is a very retrograde step.

“We feel that this is a lack of judgement from the British Government and we absolutely agree with what the Tánaiste has said.

“There is a need for calm, but at the same time it is very difficult to deal with a government that you can’t trust.

“And there probably is a role for President Biden at this stage to make his views known to the British Government as to how destabilising the actions of the British Government have been.

“Members of Mr Biden’s administration have made their feelings known to the British Government on past matters and I think there’s possibly a role for them to do that again.”
