US president-elect Joe Biden invited to Glasgow by Boris Johnson next year

Boris Johnson has invited US president-elect Joe Biden to visit Glasgow for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) being held in the city next November.

The Prime Minister did so earlier today while congratulating Mr Biden for his victory over incumbent Donald Trump in their first call since last week's US presidential election.

Downing Street said that during the wide-ranging call Mr Johnson "warmly congratulated" Mr Biden on his victory, which Republican Mr Trump continues to contest with baseless allegations of fraud.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister added: "I look forward to strengthening the partnership between our countries and to working with him on our shared priorities - from tackling climate change, to promoting democracy and building back better from the pandemic."

As well as inviting Mr Biden to the United Nations climate crisis summit, Downing Street said the Prime Minister discussed trade with Mr Biden as he seeks to negotiate a post-Brexit deal with Washington, with the recovery from the coronavirus pandemic another topic of discussion.

The COP26 summit had been due to take place in November 2020, but was delayed as a result of the global coronavirus pandemic.

An estimated 90,000 people, including around 200 world leaders, are expected to attend the summit, which takes place at the SEC Centre over 10 days between November 1 and 12 next year.
