US President Donald Trump tests positive for coronavirus

President Donald Trump and his wife Melania are in quarantine after both testing positive for coronavirus.

He tweeted the news on Friday morning, saying "Flotus (Melania) and I tested positive for COVID-19.

"We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!"

Before announcing the news, two hours earlier Trump had tweeted that his aide Hope Hicks had tested positive for the virus.

He wrote: "Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!"

She travelled with him on Air Force One to a TV debate in Ohio this week.

It comes just days after his debate with Joe Biden in the presidential race.

The stunning development comes a month before the US election on November 3.

The US President and his Democratic challenger attacked and interrupted each other during the first 2020 presidential debate on Tuesday.

Earlier on Thursday night, Trump revealed that one of his advisers he had been working with had tested positive, "Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible!

"The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!"

Hicks, who is a public relations consultant, began feeling mild symptoms during the plane ride home from a rally in Minnesota on Wednesday evening, according to an administration officials.

Mr Trump is now expected to be in quarantine for some two weeks while facing treatment for the disease.

The president is 74 years old, putting him at higher risk of serious complications from the virus.

Still, The Associated Press quoted an unidentified White House doctor as saying Mr Trump would continue carrying out his duties 'without disruption' despite the diagnosis.

The positive tests for the Trumps come as stark reminders that the coronavirus continues to spread, even as Mr Trump has tried desperately to suggest it no longer poses a danger.

On Friday morning, Boris Johnson said: "My best wishes to President Trump and the First Lady. Hope they both have a speedy recovery from coronavirus."
